Why this firm exists

A firm founded by someone who sat where you are sitting now

I lived the family court system before I joined it — five years of litigation, 198 filings, and a custody fight I ultimately won by representing myself. That experience is the reason this firm exists.

Before any of that, I was a marketing executive, not a lawyer. When my own custody case began I had no legal training and no roadmap — only a growing understanding of how overwhelming this system is when you are inside it and afraid of losing your children.

It ran for five years. It cost roughly $400,000 and reached 198 separate court filings. At a certain point I stopped waiting to be rescued and began representing myself, learning the law one motion at a time because I could not afford to get it wrong.

I won equal custody of my children. Then I went to law school — because I never again wanted a parent to walk into that courtroom as unprepared as I once was. I built this firm around that resolve.

Jos Family Law was founded by someone who sat where you are sitting now. That experience shapes every case we take, every attorney we hire, and every outcome we pursue.

How we help

The areas we practice, in depth

Family law is the whole of what we do. These are the matters we handle most often for Orange County families.

Divorce

California is a no-fault state, which means neither spouse has to prove wrongdoing to end a marriage — and it also means there is a mandatory six-month waiting period from the date of service before a divorce can be finalized. We guide you through the full range, from cooperative uncontested filings to genuinely contested divorces involving property, support, and parenting time. Wherever your matter falls on that spectrum, our role is the same: to explain clearly what the law says about your situation, protect what matters to you, and move the process forward without adding to the strain you are already carrying.

Where we go deepest

High-Asset & Business-Owner Divorce

This is where our firm is built to go deepest. High-asset and business-owner divorces turn on questions most firms would rather refer out: what a closely held business is actually worth, whether assets have been moved, hidden, or quietly undervalued, and how to divide holdings that don't sit still — tech equity, stock options, restricted units, real estate, and investment accounts. We work with business valuation and forensic accounting to establish the true financial picture rather than the convenient one, and we handle the multistate jurisdiction issues that arise when income, property, or a spouse crosses state lines. When the estate is complex, the details are not a formality — they are the case.

Child Custody

Custody in California is decided in two parts — legal custody, which is the right to make major decisions for your child, and physical custody, which is where your child actually lives. We represent parents across the full range of these matters: high-conflict disputes, relocation or move-away cases, and requests to modify an existing order when circumstances have genuinely changed. Our founder litigated his own custody case for five years, so this work is not abstract to us. We focus on presenting a clear, credible picture of what serves your child, and on giving you a steady, prepared advocate at a moment when the stakes could not feel higher.

Divorce After 50

Ending a long marriage later in life raises questions a younger divorce rarely does. Decades of shared building have to be untangled: retirement accounts and pensions divided correctly, a long-marriage estate valued and split, and the financial runway of both spouses considered with real care. Mistakes here are hard to undo because there is less time to recover from them. We approach these matters with the patience they deserve — accounting for the full history of the marriage, protecting the security you spent a lifetime earning, and helping you move into the next chapter on stable ground rather than in a rush.

Spousal Support

Spousal support can take two forms: temporary support while a case is pending, and longer-term support ordered as part of the final judgment. We represent spouses on both sides of these questions — those requesting support and those responding to a request — and we handle modifications when a job loss, a raise, a remarriage, or another real change in circumstances means an existing order no longer fits reality. Support is driven by specific factors and real numbers, not guesswork, and our job is to make sure the figures presented to the court reflect the truth of your situation rather than one side's preferred version of it.

Domestic Violence

When safety is the immediate concern, the legal response has to be both fast and precise. We help clients seek restraining and protective orders, and we represent those responding to one, where the consequences for custody, housing, and reputation are serious. These cases move quickly and carry lasting weight, so preparation matters enormously. We handle them with discretion and steadiness — helping you understand exactly what an order does and does not do, gathering what the court needs to see, and making sure your account is presented clearly and taken seriously.

Flat-Fee Uncontested Divorce

When both spouses genuinely agree on the terms — how property is divided, how parenting time works, and how support is handled — an uncontested divorce can be resolved for a flat $5,500, with no hourly surprises. It is the most affordable, least adversarial path through a divorce, and for cooperating couples it is often the right one. Because it depends on real agreement between both spouses, it isn't the fit for every situation; if the terms are still in dispute, we will tell you plainly and point you toward full representation instead.

We also handle mediation, legal separation, paternity, and prenuptial agreements.

For complex cases

Built for the hard ones.

Most firms refer out high asset, multistate, or business involved cases. Jos Family Law was designed to handle them.

  • Business valuation and forensic accounting
  • Assets moved, hidden, or undervalued
  • Real estate and investment property
  • Tech equity and stock options
  • Multistate jurisdiction

In high-asset matters, time is not neutral. Assets can be restructured, repositioned, or quietly moved while a party waits — which is exactly why an early, prepared read on your finances matters.

Depth that other firms lean on

Our president, Shakeb Razai, has spent over 19 years practicing exclusively in family law — complex high asset divorces to contested custody matters involving business valuation, forensic accounting, and multistate jurisdiction. His depth in the field is rare enough that other law firms have retained him as a consultant on their most complicated cases.
Shakeb RazaiPresident

You don't have to figure this out alone.

Your first step is a $350 consultation with an attorney — a real conversation about your actual matter and your options, not a sales screener.

For cooperating spouses

Uncontested divorce. $5,500 flat.

$5,500flat fee

This is the right track when both spouses are in agreement about the divorce — no contested custody, no dispute over how assets are divided. One clear price, no hourly meter.

An honest note up front: paid social reaches one person at a time, so it may be reaching only one side of a couple. If your spouse isn't on board yet, this isn't the right track — and that's fine. We simply move you to full representation instead. Same firm, same team. Choosing this door carries no risk.

What the flat fee covers

  • Preparation and filing of all required divorce documents
  • A marital settlement agreement reflecting your terms
  • Guidance through the six-month process, start to judgment
  • One flat $5,500 fee — no hourly surprises

When it isn't the right track

  • Contested custody or parenting-time disputes
  • Disagreement over how property or support is handled
  • High-asset, business-owner, or multistate complexity

If any of these apply, full representation is the right path — and we handle that in-house.

Jos Family Law has been absolutely fantastic in helping me through my child custody case. Mr Jos communicated with me throughout the entire process. He was very empathetic and understanding with my case and my concerns. The team was always supportive and never once did I feel like they didn't take my case seriously. In the end I received the outcome I was looking for which was Sole Physical Custody.

Common questions

Answers before you reach out

What am I entitled to in a California divorce?

California is a community-property, no-fault state, which generally means what the two of you built together during the marriage is divided between you, while separate property stays with the spouse it belongs to. Support and parenting arrangements are decided on their own factors. What that looks like in your case depends on the specifics — which is exactly what your consultation is for.

How long does a divorce take in California?

Because California is a no-fault state, there is a mandatory six-month waiting period that runs from the date the responding spouse is served. That is the earliest a divorce can be finalized. Cooperative, uncontested cases often track close to that minimum, while contested matters involving property, support, or custody can take longer.

How is child custody actually decided?

California courts separate legal custody — the right to make major decisions for your child — from physical custody, meaning where your child lives. Both are decided around your child's best interests, weighing stability, each parent's involvement, and the specific facts. High-conflict, relocation, and modification cases each have their own considerations, which we walk through with you.

What does a retainer cover, and what does $5,500 include?

Full-representation retainers start at $5,500 and fund the ongoing work on your case — filings, negotiation, court appearances, and counsel throughout. Separately, a flat-fee uncontested divorce is a fixed $5,500 that covers the full document preparation and filing for couples who agree on all terms. Your consultation is where we match the right structure to your matter.

Do both spouses have to agree for the $5,500 flat fee?

Yes. The flat-fee uncontested divorce is built for couples who agree on the terms — property, parenting time, and support. If you agree on everything, it's the most affordable path. If you don't, that's not a problem; we simply move you to full representation instead, with the same team.

My spouse already filed — what should I do first?

Don't ignore it. Once you've been served, there are deadlines to respond, and missing them can affect the outcome. The best first step is a consultation so you understand what was filed, what it means for you, and what your response should be. Bring the paperwork you received and any prior court orders.

Do you handle business owners and multistate cases?

Yes — this is a core strength of the firm. We handle high-asset and business-owner divorces involving business valuation, forensic accounting, tech equity and stock options, and multistate jurisdiction. Most firms refer these cases out; we were built to handle them, and other firms have retained our president as a consultant on their most complex matters.

What languages does the firm work in?

Our team serves clients in English, Spanish, and Arabic, so you can talk through your matter in the language you're most comfortable with. We serve Orange County, California — all 39 cities — from our office in Orange.
